“These paintings show the other side to Cornwall, the less glamorous, industrial side…”

Kurt Jackson.

China clay is omnipresent in our everyday lives.

It is an important ingredient in paper, light bulbs, toothpaste, plastics and porcelain – and Cornwall has the largest china clay deposits in the world.

For this project, Kurt Jackson worked in situ at Littlejohn’s China clay works near St Austell, observing the workers in the pit as they extracted and transported the china clay in an extraordinary manmade landscape. The dramatic (and sometimes extreme) variations in the weather inspired a diverse range of drawings and paintings, perched on the edge of the pit or down in the depths – including the clay and stone in the mix.
